Newspaper Rock State Historic Monument – Is in Utah and 53
miles south of Moab and is east of Canyonlands National Park on Hwy 211. The rock has over 600 petroglyphs on it
dating back 2,000 years. It has easy
access and is very well preserved. The
dark coating is called desert varnish and was chipped off by the native American artists with sharp tools during the prehistoric and historic periods.
