Bald Eagle

The bald eagle is our national bird. (Haliaeetus leucocephalus is the scientific name).

Wing span is from 72 to 90 inches. Juvenile bald eagles are a mixture of white and brown. It takes four to five years to reach maturity. They have 7,000 feathers and sit at the top of the food chain. They mainly eat fish, rodents, small birds and sometimes carrion. Most bald eagles live in Alaska and Canada. They make a high pitched squeaking sound and have a behavior of “cartwheeling” where they clasp talons and spin down towards the ground and let go at the last moment. I was walking along Prince William Sound and came across 25 - 30 bald eagles eating a dead seal. I was fortunate enough that this eagle let me get within 2 feet of it. You can see my reflection in the eagle's eye.
